Still nights at Cairnsmore… and very messy eaters.

This miniature Ruru was inspired by the quiet, moonlit evenings here at Cairnsmore. Nothing like stepping outside at night, and hearing the unmistakable call of the Ruru echoing through the stillness.

One spring morning, I discovered what it looks like after a Ruru has been feasting: we came upon a scattering of Pūriri Moth wings across the ground. You could imagine the Ruru sneaking in and energetically enjoying the plump body of the moth! A tiny, poignant reminder of how beauty and wildness intertwine. Of course, daughter - Miss Morgan and I gathered them all up for artistic purposes…

Painted in acrylic and sealed with resin for a luminous depth, this miniature is finished with a copper strap frame that adds an earthy, handcrafted touch. The colour palette for this collection draws from the rich tones of aged copper patina, a theme that will continue into the printed mini Christmas décor to come.
