A portrait of an unexpected friend.

This miniature celebrates the prematurely fledged magpie who landed on our lawn in spring, likely knocked from her nest in a burst of wild wind. Naïve, curious, very loud, and endlessly entertaining, she quickly became part of the daily rhythm here at Cairnsmore.

She now lives outside with the duck, who also arrived in the most unlikely of ways - kicked out of her nest as a tiny duckling, found running round and round in circles on the lawn and ending up in a box by our fire. The magpie has, quite simply, become the duck’s companion… whether she likes it or not. (The duck is very persistent!)
