Maire and Messengers - Puriri Moth
Maire and Messengers - Puriri Moth
Acrylic on ancient maire | Resin finish | 135 x 95 mm
Part of the Maire and Messenger series
Painted onto a richly grained fragment of ancient maire, this luminous puriri moth stretches its wings across the polished surface, its soft greens and buttery yellows glowing against the timber’s dark warmth. A fine white messenger thread curls delicately through the composition, symbolising transformation, connection, and the ephemeral beauty of the unseen world.
The Puriri Moth is New Zealand’s largest endemic moth, spending years underground before emerging for just a few fleeting nights of flight. A reminder that even brief moments of beauty and light can leave a lasting mark.
Finished in a clear, glossy resin that magnifies both colour and grain, this work is a one-of-a-kind piece from my Maire and Messenger series—where nature, story, and reclaimed material meet in quiet reverence.
