I was listening subconsciously for a long while in the evenings as I would do my before dark chores outside, before I actually paid attention to the cacophony and chaos happening on the front lawn in the Griselinia hedge.
Once I actually noticed that each evening the hedge would fill up with hundreds of birds, looking to settle in the for the night. The chatting and screeching is LOUD, but in the morning, I wake to the songs and gentler chats in the hedge.
I sat one afternoon quietly, (because if you go near, those hundreds of birds vacate at pace, which is also a sight to see), and watched to see who was heading in there. I saw Fantail, Finch, Blackbird, Thrush, Wax-eye, Starling and of course Sparrows in high numbers!!
This painting is a playful, joy-filled expression of what I can see and hear in my hedge everyday. The copper thread swirls around the painting connecting all the birds, because I wonder what they are saying in there!? And yes, I like to take risks when I paint, I took the drill, and drilled hundreds of holes in the painting to accommodate my needle and thread…
The work has been completed with a handcrafted native Matai timber frame, with copper detail in each corner. Thank you Sam Davison for your clever, beautiful work.
